Website Maintenance and Updates

Rare Patient News. Well Done.

Patient Worthy is a legacy website that contains tens of thousands of articles related to rare disorders. When I was brought onto the Patient Worthy team in order to manage the website, it was drastically out of date in terms of web and maintenance standards.

Bringing the website to modern standards required updates to multiple plugins, replacement of plugins that are no longer supported, and updating the instance of WordPress to the newest version. This required numerous rounds of remediation and ensuring that content and design elements did not break due to the various updates required. In the process of this remediation, dozens of elements had to be updated in order to function properly as the majority of the site was custom built and had no modularity. There were numerous elements that were managed manually rather than dynamically and created large amounts of overhead. In order to remediate this, well established and supported plugins were utilized to replace most of the custom code, with slight modifications, to allow for easy content management. This included consolidating and fixing the countless categories and taxonomies of disease states and new categories to create a easier experience navigating the website.

There is still a journey ahead for the site, with a full redesign to be done in the future. This includes full accessibility, and further efficiencies to implement for site management and user experience.
